Knowing how the team truly functions is essential to determining the most effective way to consult with it and/or to lead it.
Some types of work (like bookkeeping and phone sales) are best done by individuals working independently. Other types of work (like product development and marketing) are best when individuals interact with one another to get things done. With other teams, the best results occur when there is a combination of the two.
There are three kinds of teams:
Independent Teams — consist of individuals working independently to accomplish shared goals — like swimming teams.
Hybrid Teams — consist of individuals working both collaboratively and independently, each at least 30% of the time — like baseball teams.
Collaborative Teams — consist of individuals working interactively with each other to accomplish shared goals — like basketball teams.
